Silas Bolef began his career as an electrician in the late 1930s. He worked for many companies, including RCA, McKee, Ford & Morris among others. In 1949, Silas launched his business from the basement of his father’s paper hanging shop in southwest Philadelphia. With his wife, Rose, as the office staff and no vehicle, Silas completed small electrical projects, often riding the trolley to work carrying his tools and materials. Within a few years he was contracting for school and business projects, hiring more workers and gaining a reputation for excellent work.
The company continued to grow and moved to the western suburbs of Norristown in the early 1950s.
In 1957, the Silas Bolef Company joined the National Electrical Contractors Association and became signatory to IBEW Local 380. Silas’ son, Steven joined the company in the 1970s and became president in 1990.
